The NCIA Youth In Transition School opened in 1994 to serve the educational needs of children who are unable to participate in traditional school programs. The school is an outgrowth of NCIA’s commitment to provide a continuum of services to youth who require special education programming. In September 1999, the School moved into a new building at 7205 Rutherford Road. This one story, 25,000-square-foot, red brick building was specifically designed to meet the needs of our students, with windows in each classroom and a video security monitoring system.
During the 2005-2006 school year, the school opened a second building, located at 7130 Rutherford Road, to provide additional classroom space for our middle school students, a new suite for our autistic students and expanded vocational educational programming. This is a two story brown brick building with windows in each classroom, with the exception of the autistic suite. Movement within the school is monitored by a video security system. Breakfast and lunch are served in each building. The students attending the 7130 Rutherford Road building are able to use the gym, art room, and media center at 7205 Rutherford Road.
The NCIA Youth in Transition School, under the leadership of the executive director of education and two directors of education, operates a nonpublic special educational program: Type I full day special education and related services program for students with autism, emotional disturbance and/or mental retardation in an elementary school (grades 6-8); a secondary school (grades 9-12); and in a non-graded (ages 14-21) educational program. The school has the capacity to serve 140 male and female students between the ages of 11 and 21. A special education teacher and an instructional assistant staff every classroom with a limit of no more than nine students in each classroom. Each student is provided individualized instructional programming and related services based on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
The secondary school (grades 9-12) offered by the school grants secondary school credits and issues credits towards a local school system diploma. Students will be eligible to receive a diploma from a local school system.
The mission of the NCIA Youth in Transition School is to provide a structured learning environment that will support the maximum development of each student. The school addresses the students’ physical, psychological, intellectual, and social needs. This mission is accomplished in a planned process through provision of a strong therapeutic component within the school. The school works in close partnership with students, their families, the local school system, and community-based organizations.
The NCIA Youth in Transition School believes that the responsibility of education is to provide all students with the basic skills needed for a useful and fulfilling life. This can only be accomplished by developing the fullest potential of each student. We recognize the individuality of each child and that each student can make a unique contribution to society. The educational needs of each individual vary and we strive to deliver exceptional services to every student.
Simply stated, our goals are to:
- Provide a safe environment for students to achieve success in school and in the community
- Provide special education classroom instruction and related services
- Work with students, their families, and local educational agencies toward moving students to their least restrictive environment
