Education Alternatives for Youth in Transition
NCIA’s Youth in Transition School (YIT) is a nonpublic, full-day special education program for students ages 11-21 with significant barriers such as autism, emotional disabilities, and intellectual disabilities.
Approved by the Maryland State Department of Education as a Type I school, YIT offers academic instruction, vocational experiences, clinical services, and behavior support for students pursuing a high school diploma or certificate of completion. The YIT provides individualized care to address students’ physical, psychological, intellectual, and social needs, helping them overcome behavior, clinical, and learning difficulties and often achieve academic success for the first time. NCIA’s YIT School primarily serves Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Prince George’s County, but students attend from school districts across Maryland.
YIT admits students who require a small, highly structured individualized class setting. The admissions process involves referrals from school systems, interviews with the youth and family, and a review by the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team.
At the Youth In Transition School, we’re dedicated to changing lives by providing an all-encompassing educational program that addresses the needs of diverse learners. We strive to help each student reach their full potential as lifelong learners and productive citizens.

High School
(Grades 9-12) Courses meet the requirements for a high school diploma or certificate of completion.
Middle School
(Grades 6-8) Focus on core subjects following Maryland College Career Readiness Standards (MCCRS).
Vocational Opportunities
On and off-campus job experiences to enhance job readiness skills.
Our therapeutic staff provides services to students in a variety of therapeutic settings, including educational and vocational classrooms, small groups, and individual sessions. We use the latest techniques and technologies to provide state-of-the-art treatment and evaluation techniques to assist our students in maximizing their educational goals.
Provided by clinical social workers, focusing on social and emotional development.
Anger management, peer mediation, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention.
